For nearly fifteen years I wrote regular travel features for magazines and towards the end of that period for the Sunday Times. Direction of Travel is a selection of my travel writing. The originals were written to please my editor. At the Sunday Times I worked for the legendary Christine Walker. I was extraordinarily fortunate. After the paper moved to Wapping she held court and commissioned her writers from the bar at the Groucho Club. It was noisy, I am hard of hearing due to my and we were so prone to having a drink after my next commission had been agreed that I was forced to ask her to write down the crucial details of the commission was forced to get her to write the down the crucial facts which was so noisy that I once produced did most of her work to most reworked to a greater or lesser degree.
